The dosage and administration of ferrous fumarate need to be adjusted according to age, population, and purpose (prevention or treatment), as detailed below:
I. Dosage and Administration for Adults
Prevention of iron-deficiency anemia: Take 0.2g daily, usually after meals to reduce gastrointestinal irritation.
Treatment of iron-deficiency anemia: 0.2~0.4g each time, 3 times a day, with a total daily dose of 0.6~1.2g. The course of treatment depends on the severity of anemia; generally, after hemoglobin returns to normal, continuous administration for 1~2 months is required to replenish stored iron.
II. Dosage and Administration for Children
Pediatric dosage must be adjusted based on age and weight to avoid overdose:
Under 1 year old: 35mg each time, 3 times a day;
1~5 years old: 70mg each time, 3 times a day;
6~12 years old: 140mg each time, 3 times a day.
Children’s medication is also recommended to be taken after meals and must be supervised by adults to prevent accidental ingestion.
III. Precautions
The medication should be swallowed whole (as tablets or capsules); if it is a chewable tablet, it can be chewed before swallowing to avoid staining teeth.
Avoid taking it with tea or coffee (tannic acid affects iron absorption), and it is not advisable to take it simultaneously with antacids (e.g., aluminum hydroxide) or tetracycline drugs. A 2-hour interval is required between administrations.
If severe gastrointestinal discomfort occurs (such as severe abdominal pain or vomiting), stop taking the medication immediately and consult a doctor to adjust the dosage or switch to another drug.
The above dosages are conventional recommendations. Specific dosages should be adjusted according to the patient’s anemia severity, individual tolerance, and doctor’s guidance to ensure safety and effectiveness.
